I have used this kit for many years with great success but now need to purchase more reagents. What is included in the refill kit?

Thank you for your feedback! The refill kit includes simulated blood and antisera samples. These samples are the same size as the ones included in the full kit.

Yes, I recommend
We have the supplies needed to run the test without having to purchase the whole kit, so we've just purchased the refill kits. They're great, and clearly show the blood type. You do need to tell students that the results are not instant, or they will walk away with incorrect results.

This is a great kit to show different blood types. Given a minute to react, positive results are easily seen. The blood samples also are specific enough that you can also do a blood cell count under a microscope, though students can sometimes have difficulty finding the blood "cells" under the microscope the first time. The language in the lab packet is thick for 9th grade students, and does need plenty of time before and after the lab for explanations, but the actual procedures for the lab are simple enough. Much better than trying to convince students that milk and vinegar are blood samples!

Safety Data Sheet Available ONLINE? - I cannot find the safety data sheets (SDS) available online for this kit. It would be helpful for future laboratories. In the previous years I have received MSDS for the simulated blood and simulated anti-serum but do not yet need to order refill kits. It would be greatly appreciated if this kit had SDS available online. Thank you!

Simulated ABO and Rh Blood Typing Lab Activity
Educational Classroom Kits and Activities
Using Ward's safe and nontoxic simulated blood, students can simulate a blood-typing experiment and delve into the concepts of Rh typing.

  • Students Employ the Concepts of Structures and Properties (LS1) and Heredity (LS3)
  • Kit Aligns with National Standards
  • Material for 12 Groups of Students
  • Estimated Lab Time—Part A: 30 Minutes, Part B: 20 Minutes
  • Assessments and Vocabulary Words Target Common Core Standards
Upon completion of this kit, students will have typed an unknown sample of blood. During this process, they employ the basic science framework concepts of Structures and Properties (LS1) and Heredity (LS3) to examine the risks of Rh incompatibilities and view simulated red and white blood cells under a microscope.

This kit aligns with all published National Standards. Pre and post-laboratory assessments and vocabulary words target specific Science and Engineering Practices and Common Core Standards.

Accessories information: Refill kit includes simulated blood samples and antisera.

Ordering information: The class-size kit (12 lab groups) contains one bottle each of Ward's Simulated Blood: Mr. Smith, Mr. Jones, Mr. Green, and Ms. Brown. Simulated anti-A serum, simulated anti-B serum, simulated anti-Rh serum, 48 blood-typing slides, 200 toothpicks, one package of microscope slides, one package of coverslips, a teacher's guide, and a student's copymaster are also included. Compound microscopes (400x magnification) and markers are not included. The individual kit (1 lab group) contains enough materials for one lab group.
