A mysterious ape-like creature has been caught wandering the nearby forest. Could it be the ever- elusive Bigfoot? Or is there another explanation for the sighting? In this lab, students are provided DNA representing the genetic material isolated from hair samples from the alleged Bigfoot in question, a black bear, and a recently escaped chimpanzee from the local zoo. They will use gel electrophoresis to compare the DNA fingerprint of these animals which will aid in determining whether this mystery creature is of sasquatch origin, or from an animal more close to home.
