Disposal

This disposal method is published for your convenience. You MUST have checked with your federal, state, and local regulations before using this method and these methods are only applicable for small laboratory sized quantities.

Use a lab apron, chemical resistant gloves and goggles before following the below method to dispose of hazardous waste.

 1. Fill a large, 1-L beaker ¾ full with water in a fume hood.
 2. Slowly add the carbide granules to the beaker of water with stirring.
  a. Flammable gas will be produced, make sure the fume hood is running and there are no ignition sources present.
 3. Wait for 6 hours.
 4. Neutralize the basic mixture with dilute hydrochloric acid to about a pH of 7.
 5. Decant the neutral solution and pour the final solution the drain with at least a 20-fold excess of water.
 6. Leave the precipitate out to dry for 24 hours and then package it for disposal in a landfill.
