Disposal

This disposal method is published for your convenience. You MUST have checked with your federal, state, and local regulations before using this method and these methods are only applicable for small laboratory sized quantities.

Use a lab apron, chemical resistant gloves and goggles before following the below method to dispose of hazardous waste.

This procedure is for neutralizing 0.2 mol of aldehyde.
1.Add 100 mL of water and 0.2 mol of aldehyde to a 1-L beaker in a fume hood.
2.Add about 30 mL of 0.3 M potassium permanganate solution over a period of about 10 minutes to the aldehyde/water mixture.
a.A temperature increase and loss of the purple permanganate color should be achieved. If this does not occur, heat the mixture until the purple color disappears.
3.Add about 470 mL more of potassium permanganate slowly. Heat the temperature to 70-80 °C using a hot plate and stir the mixture until the purple color disappears or it is stirred for one hour.
4.Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature. The mixture will be basic and will need to be neutralized with dilute acid to about a pH of 7. If purple color remains, add 0.1 M sodium sulfite until the mixture is brown.
5.Pour the final solution down the drain with at least a 20-fold excess of water.

Solution Prep

To prepare FAA solution, mix 50 ml of 95% ethyl alcohol, 2.5 ml of glacial acetic acid, 5.5 ml of formaldehyde, and 42 ml of DI water.
